After Ellie Brooks survived a bad relationship she completely retreated from creating new relationships and certainly wasn’t looking for romance. She didn’t date but had a wonderful circle of family and friends which she convinced herself would always be enough. Hurrying to a family event, Ellie accidentally bumps into Victor Garza not once but twice. Unlike others who had tried to get close to her, Ellie was unable to resist his handsome good looks and his charming demeanor. He was… different. He was also convinced they needed to see where their relationship could lead. Ellie was equally sure there was no future for them. Misunderstandings as well as outside interference made sure their path was not smooth but certainly made for entertaining reading.The writing is rich with sparkling dialogue and plot conflicts erupting in every corner. The love scenes were steamy and the romance percolating between Ellie and Victor was almost tangible. The back and forth between the two seemed to take on a rhythm of its own as the story progressed. While a bit predictable, the author was able to keep me hooked through each up and down in their rocky road. Ellie and Victor’s family and friends provided support to the lovers and also provided some of the more heart-wrenching moments in the story. I really enjoyed this story and was happy to realize that Alex and Jordan would have a chance of their own. On to book two!

I love how Elizabeth (Ellie) doesn't realize who she's really talking to and acts as if it doesn't bother her (which it doesn't as she doesn't know it's Victor she's talking to haha) "no, no, I mean I'm sure he's great and all, there are like a thousand girls in line looking like they are waiting to see the crowned prince but I don't know much about Latin music so I'm kind of at a loss." Victor I loved right off, "I'm not. I think it must be a sign, don't you? Fate maybe? I mean what are the odds of running into a beautiful woman twice in one night?" Victor is so thoughtful, "look, I'm only here for a few days and I just wanna spend as much time with you as I can. I thought you could spend the night then we could go get some breakfast in the morning and spend the day together. I promised you that we would take things slow and I meant it." Sweet, sweet boy. Victor does things to me, "don't get scared, just hold onto the sheets. This is gonna be good, baby." I mean he really does things to me, "come on, Baby. In the last few days, I've seen it all, and in case you haven't noticed, I like it all." Ellie, that girl is a spitfire and she has no problems taking claim on her man, "I'm no on'es replacement. I'm the upgrade. You'll do well to remember that. I don't know who the hell you think you are but I will rip you to shreds if you get in my face or come near Victor again."
Elle Brooks is emotionally closed off and doesn't believe in dating or love anymore. She lets no man into her life and has no intention of changing that anytime soon. It is her niece's birthday and she needs to get her a gift. Elle literally bumps into Victor Garza outside the bathroom of the bookstore. She has no idea that he is a famous singer, all she sees is a HOT Latin man! Despite her life choice to remain single, she can't help but be attracted to schmexy Victor. Victor finds Elle's clumsiness and small conversation adorable, but she leaves before he has a chance to speak to her more. Luck would have it that they meet again, and he convinces Elle (Ellie as he calls her) to go out with him.
I originally had rated this at a 3 because I really liked Victor but wasn't really Ellie's fan. She is very insecure and puts herself down constantly. Ellie acts like she is undeserving of Victor and at some points it wore on my nerves. My change of heart happened because you want to like Elle, you want to know what in the world happened to her to make her this way. The story itself isn't bad, it was just my irritation towards Elle but it does change.
This is what made me fall in love with Victor's character...they have that connection that you can't fully explain. He is patient, but yet demanding of her. He knows how far he can push Ellie without her running away, and if she does run he chases her. Victor just seems genuinely happy that he doesn't have someone just wanting to be with him because of his stardom. When Victor seems that he will give up everything for Ellie, including his career, his mother (who is certifiable) steps in. Victor again shows his love for Ellie by choosing her and letting his mother know she will not control his life, or his relationship. Victor just wants Ellie to tear down her walls and let him in. He loves her, whole-heartedly and is willing to give her everything she needs, she just has to let him.
FINALLY, you find out exactly what happened to Ellie and I think a part of my heart broke. I can't possibly begin to imagine the despair and pain she went through. I only wish she had told him sooner so that I wasn't so lukewarm to her throughout so much of the book.
I enjoyed the book though, it was great to read a story that had an ending. It was nice to not to be tortured with month after month of waiting for the next book. Definitely my perfect book for a beach day, where you want some love, some heat, and just a good story!
